The Ariège is one of the least populated départements of
France, and Foix, its capital, is the smallest. All this is to say that you
will encounter here one of the regions most hit by the depopulation of the
countryside and it has, naturally, some of the wildest countryside. A
paradise for ramblers and lovers of rural architecture, the Ariège offers a
large variety of almost pollution-free landscapes, magnificent walks in
mountains where nature is not aggressive, without significant danger and not
overwhelming to the rambler. There are neither truly dizzying views nor
impressive summits (except for a few Pyrenean peaks). Here everything is
charm and harmony! From a geographical point of
view, the Ariège appears as a succession of three parallel waves, each being
higher than the previous. In fact after the northern plain comes a range of
gentle hills (les montagnes du Plantaurel). Then on the Foix - St. Girons
axis is a giant valley, followed by the 'massif de l'Arize' and finally,
after two other valleys, the Pyrenees. Crossing these green and lush
mountains by picturesque cols will not be the least of your pleasures.
